GLP-1s and Weight Loss Management

A Medical Approach to Weight Management—Built Around You

If you’ve struggled to lose weight, maintain weight loss, or improve health conditions related to your weight, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to navigate it on your own.

At The Family Practice, we take a comprehensive approach to weight management that looks beyond the number on the scale. Our providers consider your overall health, medical history, medications, lifestyle, goals, and individual needs when developing a treatment plan.

For some patients, GLP-1 medications or other prescription weight-management medications may be an appropriate part of that plan. And if you’ve already been using weight loss medications and you are dealing with loose skin or stubborn fat, we have solutions for that too within our Aesthetics clinic!

Our goal is not simply weight loss. It’s helping you work toward better overall health and sustainable habits.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 medications work with hormone pathways involved in appetite, fullness, and food intake. Some medications in this category can help people feel fuller sooner and reduce hunger, which can support weight loss when combined with healthy eating and physical activity.

There are several medications used in medical weight management. Depending on your health history and individual needs, your provider may discuss options such as semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Tirzepatide works on both GLP-1 and GIP hormone pathways, while semaglutide works primarily through the GLP-1 pathway. Both are FDA-approved medications for certain adults with obesity or overweight and weight-related health conditions.

Is a GLP-1 Right for You?

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone—and they aren’t intended to be a quick fix.

During your appointment, your provider will consider factors such as:

  • Your current weight and health history

  • Your BMI and weight-related health conditions

  • Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other health factors

  • Current medications and supplements

  • Previous attempts at weight loss

  • Your nutrition and physical activity habits

  • Your personal goals

  • Potential risks, side effects, and medication interactions

Prescription weight-management medications are generally considered for adults with obesity or for adults who are overweight and have a weight-related health condition, although individual treatment decisions depend on your medical circumstances.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight management.

More Than a Prescription

Medication is only one part of a comprehensive weight-management plan.

At The Family Practice, we believe sustainable health changes involve looking at the whole person. Your treatment plan may include discussion of:

Nutrition

Understanding what, how, and when you eat can be an important part of managing your weight and supporting your overall health.

Physical Activity

Movement and strength training can support overall health, help maintain muscle, and play an important role during weight loss.

Metabolic Health

Weight can be connected to conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Your provider can evaluate these and other factors as part of your care.

Medications

If appropriate, prescription medication may be incorporated into your treatment plan and monitored over time.

Long-Term Maintenance

Weight management doesn’t end when you reach a particular number on the scale. Your provider can help you develop strategies to maintain your progress and continue supporting your health.

Research shows that prescription weight-management medications are most effective when combined with lifestyle and behavior changes rather than used as a replacement for them.

What to Expect

1. Schedule a Consultation

Your first step is a conversation with one of our medical providers about your health and weight-management goals.

2. Review Your Health

We’ll discuss your medical history, medications, lifestyle, previous weight-management efforts, and any health conditions that may be relevant.

3. Develop Your Plan

If medication is appropriate, your provider will discuss your options, expected benefits, potential side effects, and how treatment will fit into your overall health plan.

4. Monitor Your Progress

Weight-management medications require ongoing medical oversight. Your provider can monitor your response to treatment and make adjustments when appropriate.

What About Side Effects?

Like all medications, GLP-1 and related weight-management medications can cause side effects. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal discomfort can occur, particularly as the dose is increased.

There are also important medical considerations and contraindications that your provider will review before prescribing treatment.

Many clients also deal with loose skin or areas of stubborn fat after using GLP-1s or other weight loss medication. We have solutions for these at TFP Aesthetics.

Your provider will discuss the potential benefits and risks with you and determine whether a medication is appropriate based on your individual health history.

Weight Management Is About More Than Weight

Weight is just one part of your health.

Our approach is consistent with The Family Practice’s philosophy of providing comprehensive, patient-centered care that considers the physical, emotional, and other factors affecting your well-being.

Whether medication becomes part of your plan or not, our goal is to help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your health.
